Loci: Resources

The Resources section of Loci provides a select collection of free online learning materials which are available through the site. These materials have been classroom tested and peer reviewed. Many items are posted with editorial reviews and a link to a moderated discussion group focused on the materials.

Looking for archived Digital Classroom Resources? All DCR material posted before July 2008 can be accessed by "Search" or "Browse" through the Loci Archives.

Featured Items:

Standard Deviation Applet

In this applet, a user fills in a grid to create a distribution of numbers. The applet displays the size of the standard deviation and the position of the mean in the distribution. An activity is provided to facilitate the use of the applet to investigate standard deviation.

Mean and Median Applet

Investigate properties of the mean and median of a distribution, and then test your knowledge.

Exploring Cycle Notation

Two applets for giving students some hands-on practice with cycle notation and composition of permutations.

Area from Hand-Drawn Functions

The "area function" is often discussed as part of an introduction to the definite integral. This applet provides an innovative approach to producing functions drawn with a mouse in the context of an exploration/demonstration of the area function.

Average Value of a Hand-Drawn Function

This mathlet provides an innovative tool that allows the user to sketch a function with the mouse in order to examine some common issues and misconceptions about the average value of a function.

Derivative Matching Game

This interactive, browser-based game provides students with a great activity for the "reform calculus" problem of finding "function-derivative pairs" based only on graphs. Several variations are available.

MathDL Flash Forum

A forum for educators interested in developing mathematics classroom material using Adobe Flash.

Biological ESTEEM

Excel Simulations and Tools for Exploratory, Experiential Mathematics (ESTEEM) is a project of the members of the BioQuest Curriculum Consortium.
